We may think we have only three choices of movement in any situation. The good news is that we actually have four. The tendency of the “unfinished human” is to unconsciously react by either- moving toward, away from, or pushing against. These choices are usually based upon the memory of past experiences.
Spiritual masters and teachers inform us of a fourth choice, to just rest in our Being, the now, the present moment, especially when all the other movements are inappropriate and may be coming from fear, It is such a relief to focus inside and just let go…and Be.
When any of the first three movements are a reaction instead of a real conscious choice, they are based on the past which has no reality in the present. The Self is already free. It does not need to be defended.
Then what do we think needs protection or defense? Only the ego could feel threatened because the true Self knows its own immortality. Every act of resistance is based upon the ego’s fear of death. It is terrified of surrendering to the true Self because it believes letting go of control is death, when in reality it is resisting rebirth.
The spiritual teacher, Gangagi, suggests that we start monitoring our movements to find out if they are out of balance. In other words, do you move toward others in order to please or be loved? Are you cynical and push against the world in inappropriate ways? Do you withdraw or space out to avoid confrontation? Any of these choices, if they are habitual, disengage you from a part of yourself and curtail your freedom of choice. The true Self is forever free and the illusionary demons constructed by the ego cause all of our suffering. These demons are created and sustained by our limited perception of the past and our projected fears for the future. There is another choice, experiencing the Truth.
